On November 1, 2024, a remarkable event unfolded in Mannar as Caritas Valvuthayam handed over two newly constructed permanent houses to two deserving families. The ceremonial blessing and handing over, led by the Bishop of Mannar, marked a day of hope and new beginnings for these families in Jim Brown Nagar and Jeevapuram, both in the Mannar DS division.
One of the families, who tragically lost their home to a fire in Jim Brown Nagar, had struggled for years without proper shelter. The second family, residing in Jeevapuram, had been receiving educational assistance from Caritas Valvuthayam but had also been in desperate need of a stable living environment. The construction of these houses symbolizes the organization’s enduring commitment to uplifting vulnerable families in the region.
The journey to make this dream a reality was filled with generosity and collaboration. Responding to the urgent need, Caritas Valvuthayam reached out to the National Director of Caritas Sri Lanka, Rev. Fr. Luke Nelson Perera, for support. Moved by the dire circumstances, he visited the affected families and advocated for assistance. Funding for the construction was secured from SEDEC (Caritas Sri Lanka) with additional support from local donors, making it possible to start building.
A significant contribution came from the South Bar Army, whose team assisted with the construction of one of the homes. Their collaboration underscores the spirit of unity and shared responsibility in rebuilding the lives of those in need.
The blessing and handing over ceremony was a memorable occasion attended by distinguished guests. Among them were Rev.Fr. Christhunayaham, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Mannar; Rev. Fr. Luke Nelson Perera, the National Director of Caritas Sri Lanka; Rev. Fr. G.A. Arulraj Croos, the Director of Caritas Valvuthayam; and Rev. Fr. Surendran Revel. Representatives from the South Bar Army, SEDEC staff, and the dedicated Caritas Valvuthayam team were also present to celebrate this milestone.
In his address, Rev. Fr. Luke Nelson Perera highlighted the significance of community and faith in overcoming adversity. “The work of Caritas is a testament to the love and compassion that we are called to show each other,” he shared. Rev. Fr. G.A. Arulraj Croos expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed, emphasizing the life-changing impact of the project.
The day concluded with prayers and blessings, as the families moved into their new homes filled with hope and joy. Caritas Valvuthayam remains steadfast in its mission to support the people of Mannar, bringing lasting change and improving the quality of life for those most in need.
These two families stand as a beacon of resilience and the power of collective action. Through the unwavering support of Caritas Sri Lanka, SEDEC, the South Bar Army, and the compassionate local community, dreams have become a reality, and brighter futures are now within reach.
