As part of its mission to protect and empower young people affected by crisis and conflict, Caritas Valvuthayam, through its Educational Assistance Unit, conducted a vital awareness seminar on the dangers of narcotic drugs and alcohol on 15th June 2025 at St. Lawrence’s Church, Talaimannar.
The program was held under the “Educational Assistance to Economic Crisis & War-Affected Poor Children in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka” project, generously funded by Caritas Korea.
A total of 62 students from Grades 8 to 11 (43 girls and 19 boys), all from the local hostel community, participated in the seminar. The event aimed to educate students on the risks of substance abuse and promote healthier life choices among vulnerable youth.
The session began with a welcome and introductory speech by Rev. Fr. Deni Culistas, Parish Priest of St. Lawrence’s Church. The main presentation was delivered by Fr. M. Antony Hubert, OMI, Director of CRADA (Centre for Rehabilitation of Alcoholics and Drug Addicts), who shared deep insights on the harmful effects of drug and alcohol abuse, using real-life experiences and practical guidance to engage the students.
The program was organized under the leadership of Rev. Fr. G.A. Arulraj Croos, Director of Caritas Valvuthayam – Mannar, and was coordinated by Mr. J. Christinius Croos, Programme Coordinator.
Through initiatives like this, Caritas Valvuthayam continues to play a vital role in safeguarding youth from harmful influences, while fostering resilience, awareness, and hope for a brighter future.
