Vavuniya, Sri Lanka –
A remarkable initiative took place at the Manipuram Thurkkai Amman Preschool in Vavuniya, where the preschool parents, who are also active participants in Caritas Valvuthayam’s ongoing Food Security Project, organized a community exhibition and sale of fresh vegetables harvested from their own home gardens.
This initiative, rooted in self-reliance and sustainability, showcased the vibrant outcome of the support provided by Caritas Valvuthayam, which had earlier distributed vegetable plants to the parents as part of the Food Security Project. The produce, cultivated with care and dedication in their own backyards, not only contributes to household nutrition but also provides an opportunity for supplementary income.
The opening ceremony was graced by the Food Security Team of Caritas Valvuthayam, along with the Grama Niladhari (GN) and Agriculture Instructor (AI) of the area, marking a wonderful example of community collaboration and empowerment.
This exhibition demonstrates the power of community-based efforts in enhancing food security, encouraging self-sufficiency, and promoting healthy living practices at the grassroots level. Caritas Valvuthayam remains committed to supporting such transformative local actions that ensure dignity and resilience for families in the Vanni region.
