As part of its mission to protect and empower young people affected by crisis and conflict, Caritas Valvuthayam – Mannar, through its Educational Assistance Unit, conducted an awareness seminar on the dangers of narcotic drugs and alcohol on July 13, 2025, at St. Anne’s Church, Vankalai.
This program was organized under the “Educational Assistance to Economic Crisis & War-Affected Poor Children in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka” project, generously funded by Caritas Korea.
A total of 110 students from Grades 8 to 11 (41 girls and 69 boys) from the local coastal community participated. The event aimed to equip students with knowledge about the risks of substance abuse and encourage healthier lifestyle choices among vulnerable youth.
The session opened with a welcome and introductory address by Rev. Fr. Laconz Figurado, Parish Priest of St. Anne’s Church. The keynote presentation was delivered by Rev. Fr. M. Antony Hubert, OMI, Director of the Centre for Rehabilitation of Alcoholics and Drug Addicts (CRADA), who provided in-depth insights on the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. He used real-life experiences and practical guidance to engage and inspire the students.
The program was organized under the leadership of Rev. Fr. G.A. Arulraj Croos, Director of Caritas Valvuthayam – Mannar, and coordinated by Mr. J. Christinius Croos, Programme Coordinator.
