Mannar District takes action to clean up Bengal Bird Sanctuary and raise awareness on littering.

The Bengal Bird Sanctuary, located in Mannar district in the northwest of Sri Lanka, is a beautiful region with diverse natural habitats and a haven for many species of waterfowl, including migratory birds. However, the sanctuary has been facing a major threat from irresponsible dumping of household waste, plastic, and other non-biodegradable materials, which endanger the survival of the organisms living in the area.
To address this issue, a cleaning project was carried out on 18.04.2023 with the financial assistance of the environmental conservation wing of Caritas- Valvuthayam, Misereor. Under the guidance of the Mannar urban Council and the Mannar Wildlife Department, the project was successfully implemented with the participation of humanitarian workers and the youth of the target village. The project also aimed to raise public awareness on the importance of keeping the sanctuary clean by placing billboards saying ‘This is a bird sanctuary’ and ‘Littering prohibited’ near the main road.
It is the responsibility of everyone to protect the Bengal Bird Sanctuary, which is not only a symbol of Mannar district but also a valuable natural habitat for birds and animals to live in. By taking action and raising awareness, we can ensure that this sanctuary remains a beautiful and safe place for all.
