Speech & Language therapy clinic was successfully organized by Caritas-Valvuthayam’s Early Intervention of Childhood Project and with the help of Nuffield Speech and Language School in Jaffna.

The Speech therapy clinic was held on Friday and Saturday in the villages of Adamban, Andankulam, Vaddakandal, Parappukadanthan, Kuruvil, Thevanpiddy,  Sannar in the Manthai west Divisional Secretariat and Pesalai and Thoddaveli under Mannar Divisional Secretariat. Children with speech and language impairments were visited and given speech and language therapy. In this, 22 children with speech and language impairments were treated accordingly.

The objective of this mobile clinic is to make parents aware the needful for their kids and make them aware about the importance of Speech, Language, communication and Swallowing for their children to live a better life. At the end of the 5th month visit we have seen 32 children with Disabilities.

As I mentioned earlier this Follow-up visit was started to make the people aware the different services needed for their children especially Speech Therapy and the important of Speech and Language Therapy to improve the quality of life of children with disability. Therefore, we decided to provide free accessibility for those services.

Some parents are agreed to follow Speech therapy in nearest hospitals. We believe all parents of children with disability that we worked with are educated with proper management processes. Some realized the important of education for all the children and they started schooling for their children.

As a conclusion, we think all the Children with Disabilities that we worked with should follow Speech and Language Therapy regularly. we recommend each client should be follow up the session minimum twice a week. While following up the sessions above mentioned challenges should be considered.

Challenges

  • Some parents refused to accept that their children having problems
  • Parents are afraid of accessing therapy as in their opinion it could be expose their children’s problem to the society.
  • Could not be able to follow home-based tasks due to lack of parental support.
  • Once a month visit is not enough for them, so we could not expect more improvement from each Children with disabillities
  • Less availability of therapy materials/equipment.
  • Distractive environment for conducting therapy sessions.
